Entertainment and Social Change
presented by Population Media Center

Films and television programs entertain, but can they educate and promote positive social change?  Robert Walker, the president of the Population Institute and a senior adviser to the Population Media Center (PMC), talks about the success and impact of East Los High, an award-winning serial drama that was nominated this year for three Emmy Awards. Produced by PMC in association with Wise Entertainment, East Los High aired as a Hulu original series and rose to be one of the top five shows on hulu.com during its first season. Now in its third season on Hulu, it was Hollywood’s first and only series with an all Latino cast.  Walker explains how the program and its supporting transmedia strategy are addressing some of the challenges facing urban Latino youth, including teenage pregnancy and unsafe sex. Walker also talks about the history of entertainment media as a vehicle for promoting positive social change.
